Baker In Focus

By David Martell
Beloved Bethel Bakery
50 year old PA bakery is at the center of presidential politics as
“CookieGate” unfolds and pushes its owners into the national spotlight.
I
f John Walsh is anything, he is a darn
good businessman. Not everyone could
rebound so nicely from having his
cookies dismissed by presidential candidate
Mitt Romney as looking like they came from
the local 7-Eleven.
Crazy as this sounds, that exactly
happened recently during Mr. Romney’s
campaign stop in Pittsburgh. The
presidential candidate was at a staged event
with four couples at the Bethel Park, PA
Community Center when he paused to take
note of the food and desserts on offer for the
occasion.
“I’m not sure about these cookies. They
don’t look like you made them,” Romney
said to the woman sitting next to him. “No,
no. They came from the local 7-eleven,
bakery, or whatever,” continued the
candidate. The cookies in question where
hardly convenient store fare but made that
morning by Walsh and his beloved crew
from the Bethel Bakery. Needless to say, the
comment did not go over well with Walsh
and everyone in Bethel, PA.
